The short answer

Cash runway is the number of months your current cash will last at the current net burn rate. Calculate it as cash ÷ (monthly cash costs − monthly cash receipts), then adjust for growth, cost growth and debtor timing. Investors generally expect at least 12–18 months of runway after a raise.

How it works and how to use the result

The model projects 24 months of receipts and costs, applies your growth rates, and delays revenue growth by your debtor days. A real CFO forecast adds BAS and PAYG instalments, Payday Super, payroll tax, loan repayments, R&D refunds and seasonality. CFOAvatar does this automatically from your ledger.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How much runway should a startup have?

At least 12 months at all times, and 18–24 months after a raise.

Does runway include the R&D refund?

Only include it once the claim is well supported, and time it after lodgement. Show runway with and without it.

How can I extend runway quickly?

Collect debtors faster, renegotiate supplier terms, pause discretionary spend, and consider R&D financing or a small facility.
